High Frequency Electronics has the mission of providing an exchange of ideas among engineers. Our hands-on design experience and many years of industry participation allows us to wisely select the right mix of subject matter, at the right technical depth for engineers of all experience levels. We like to think of our magazine as delivering a “chapter a month” of essential tutorial, applications-oriented and advanced material — an ongoing textbook for the continuing education and professional development of our readers.

In keeping with our attention to substantive content, our magazine is designed to present technical material clearly, with a clean, highly readable layout. This approach has a benefit to advertisers — ads stand out prominently when articles do not have unnecessary artistic frills.

Every issue of High Frequency Electronics is available online — with exactly the same appearance as the printed issues, in the universally accessible PDF format. The Online Edition is interactive, too. Readers can simply click on an ad to reach that company’s web site. Our web site also includes news headlines, events listings, supporting information for authors and advertisers, plus new and renewal subscription services. Every past article we have published is archived for download by any interested web visitor. The Archives is the most-visited part of our web site!

Tech Brief: YIG Filters

Using small conductive “loops” a YIG filter is coupled to and from a YIG spheres’ resonant magnetic field. The closer the loop, the wider the bandwidth. Bandwidth can also be expanded by increasing the number of YIG resonators and carefully “tuning” the RF coupling loops. In this brief, RF engineers will learn the three basic methods in which this coupling is applied: signal transfer; signal reflection; and oscillation feedback, and how this differentiates a bandpass from a band-reject filter.

Microwave Transceiver

The NUDC2-18/1.3-2.3 is a dual conversion Transceiver providing 2-18 GHz operation in a versatile OpenVPX platform The NUDC2-18/1.3-2.3 includes internal LOs which provide an instantaneous IF bandwidth of 1 GHz and exceptional Noise Figure: Down Converter NF= 6dB max, Up Converter NF=15dB max.

90-Degree Hybrid Couplers

Extension Modules

OML’s Signal Generator Frequency Extension Module can extend the frequency range of your existing 20 GHz microwave synthesizer to millimeter wave frequencies. Modules are available to span the waveguide bands between 50 and 500 GHz. These source modules are RoHS compliant. In addition, an option is available for manual power sweeps using a micrometer as a tuning mechanism. The standard source module has a prerequisite for +12V that is easily satisfied with many commercially available power supplies. As an alternative, a specialized option is available (SxxMS-AG) that enables the the Keysight PSG to satisfy the source module's power supply prerequisite.

Insulated Wire Inc. is pleased to announce that following the retirement of a French delegate, IW Microwave Products Division President, John Morelli, has been appointed as the Secretary for IEC/SC46F, a subcommittee of IEC/TC46. IEC/SC46F is responsible for RF and Microwave Connectors and Components International Standardization.

Mr. Morelli, who is sponsored by Insulated Wire, brings significant RF/Microwave connector and component experience to the position, and we congratulate him on his new appointment. Mr. Morelli had been serving as the chief Technical Advisor for the US National Committee’s Technical Advisory Group to IEC/SC46F.

The US National Committee of the IEC is a fully integrated entity of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
